As man is, God once was; As God is, man may become.)

Notes in English:
In Mormon teachings, the final judgment comes in stages. The first stage occurs immediately after death. The disembodied spirit is judged as to its general goodness and is assigned to one of two places: paradise or spirit prison. Those souls in paradise enjoy peace of conscience and a time of rest. Those in spirit prison, by contrast, are tormented by guilt and are denied rest. Both groups, however, suffer because they are separated from their physical bodies, something that, according to Mormon scripture, the spirits view as a form of "bondage." (re: https://www.patheos.com/library/mormonism/beliefs/afterlife-and-salvation )
Paradise is that part of the spirit world in which the righteous spirits who have departed from this life await the resurrection of the body. It is a condition of happiness and peace. It designates a place of peace and happiness in the post-mortal spirit world, reserved for those who have been baptized and who have remained faithful (see Alma 40:12; Moroni 10:34).
Those in spirit prison have the opportunity to learn the gospel of Jesus Christ, repent of their sins, and receive the ordinances of baptism and confirmation through the work others do in temples (see Doctrine and Covenants 138:30–35). If they accept the gospel and their temple work has been done, they may enter paradise. (from LDS website)
Mormonism teaches that there are three different ‘heavenly’ kingdoms
- Celestial Kingdom: This is only for Mormons who have lived worthy lives in obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Mormon gospel.(From the lds website: In the celestial glory there are three heavens or degrees. And in order to obtain the highest, a man must enter into this order of the priesthood [meaning the new and everlasting covenant of marriage] (D&C 131:1-2)
- The promise to Mormons who achieve the highest exaltation in the Celestial Kingdom is Godhood itself. This is summed up in the well-known Mormon saying – As man is, God once was; As God is, man may become. Mormonism says “Ye shall be as Gods”.
Terrestrial Kingdom: This is for good people who have lived honorable lives but who did not accept the Mormon gospel. Those who inherit terrestrial glory will “receive of the presence of the Son, but not of the fulness of the Father. Generally speaking, individuals in the terrestrial kingdom will be honorable people “who were blinded by the craftiness of men” (D & C 76:75). This group will include members of the Church who were “not valiant in the testimony of Jesus”(D & C 76:79).
- Telestial Kingdom:
Telestial glory will be reserved for individuals who “received not the gospel of Christ, neither the testimony of Jesus” (Doctrine and Covenants 76:82). These individuals will receive their glory after being redeemed from spirit prison, which is sometimes called hell (see Doctrine and Covenants 76:84; Doctrine and Covenants 76:106).
- This is where the vast majority of wicked people will go after a period of ‘burning purification’ in what can only be described as a ‘Mormon purgatory’. Eternal punishment will only befall the devil and his followers who were cast out of heaven plus a small number of particularly evil people called the ‘sons of perdition’.
“Some people will not be worthy to dwell in any kingdom of glory. They will be called “the sons of perdition” and will have to “abide a kingdom which is not a kingdom of glory”
Thus saith the Lord concerning all those who know my power, and have been made partakers thereof, and suffered themselves through the power of the devil to be overcome, and to deny the truth and defy my power.”— (D & C 76:31)
“Concerning whom I have said there is no forgiveness in this world nor in the world to come— Having denied the Holy Spirit after having received it, and having denied the Only Begotten Son of the Father, having crucified him unto themselves and put him to an open shame. These are they who shall go away into the lake of fire and brimstone, with the devil and his angels.”— (D & C 76:34-36)
Only a handful of “sons of perdition” would go. To qualify, a person would not only have to leave the Mormon church but also vehemently speak against it. So, for all intents and purposes, Mormons were taught they had nothing to fear when it came to hell.
Ex-Mormons repeatedly shared how, as Mormons, they were frightened about going to hell.
